A specialist water team is searching a river in Cambridge as part of efforts to find a cancer specialist who is missing after a night out.

Dr Gary McGowan, 37, an oncologist from Belfast who is working at Addenbrooke's Hospital, was living in Russell Street, Cambridge.

He was last seen with friends at the Fountain and Regal pubs and Fez Club in Market Passage early on 17 March.

The team is focusing its search on the Mill Lane area of the River Cam.

Dr McGowan was last seen walking along Kings Parade and Mill Lane towards the river area. He was due to visit Belfast but did not go. Police were alerted to his disappearance on Wednesday.

Det Ch Insp Jon Hutchinson said: "We are still very open minded about what has happened to Gary.

"We have been speaking to his friends, family and colleagues who are sure Gary would not have just left the area without contacting anyone."

Anyone with information about Dr McGowan's whereabouts is asked to contact police.
